Gas discovery in Sanghar announced by PPL

The operator of Gambat South Block Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced another gas discovery at its exploration well, Hadi X-1A, located in District Sanghar, Sindh.Earlier, the company announced gas discovery in its first exploration well Kotri X-1 located in District Hyderabad, Sindh in May 2015.

PPL is working on this well with 65 per cent working interest along with its joint venture partners, Government Holdings Private Limited and Asia Resources Oil Limited with 25 per cent and 10 per cent working interest.

Hadi X-1A was spud on February 5 of this year and reached the final depth of 4,020 meters on April 19, 2016, the company announced. Based on wireline logs interpretation, potential hydrocarbon bearing zones were identified in Sembar Formation. During initial testing in Sembar Formation immeasurable amount of gas flowed at the surface for three days and reservoir appeared to be tight.

To further evaluate tight gas potential, Frac job was conducted after which flow rates improved significantly, the company said. The well flowed at 0.85 MMSCFD at 32/64 inches choke size, thus confirming the presence of natural gas at Hadi X-1A, it added.

Post Frac results suggest that it is a tight gas discovery. However, further evaluation is required to determine the size and commercial value of the discovery, based on post well studies and its integration with geological, geophysical and engineering data collected during drilling and testing of the well.

A pioneer of the natural gas industry in the country, PPL has been a frontline player in the energy sector since the mid-1950s. As a major supplier of natural gas, PPL today contributes over 20 per cent of the country’s total natural gas supplies besides producing crude oil, natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas in the country.

Japan to import textile products from Pakistan

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has announced that it will launch a new programme to step up imports of Pakistan’s textile products from February next year. In this regard, a joint website of Jica and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) has been developed in order to provide credible information about Japanese markets to exporters in Pakistan.

Disclosing this, Jica Adviser to TDAP and head of delegates, Hideaki Shimizu told industrialists that Japanese buyers had their own standards as they were very conscious about product quality. Hence, the exporters should follow their trends.

He said Japanese importers visited the Pakistan-Japan Textile Day held recently in Lahore and engaged in productive meetings with the exporters. Such meetings would help them understand each other, he said.

Replying to a question, a Japanese importer suggested that Pakistan and Japan should enter into a free trade agreement for which the Pakistani exporters would have to exert pressure on the government.

He pointed out that Pakistan’s export consignments took 17 days to reach Japan via sea route and said the duration should be curtailed by promoting fast movement of import and export consignments.

Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) Vice President Jameel Ahmed outlined some basic issues that were hindering bilateral trade.

The FCCI fully understands the importance of bilateral trade and in this regard we want to sign a memorandum of understanding with leading chambers of Japan, he said. FCCI Senior Vice President Syed Zia Alamdar Hussain said though businessmen of Faisalabad were dealing with importers of the US and European Union, they had to cope with the condition of laboratory test.

He suggested that Jica should set up a laboratory that could issue certificates, particularly for Japanese markets. He also asked the Japanese agency to install a water treatment plant in Faisalabad as it was already helping the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) to manage the water supply and sewerage system.

Pakistan textiles industry's Request to Govt

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (ATPMA) group leaders want the Pakistani government to take over the country’s textile industry, the Pakistani media has reported.

APTMA chairman SM Tanveer and a group leader Gohar Ejaz have said, "The textile industry has become unviable because of the heavily subsidised textile industries in the competing countries of the region."

In a separate development, the Pakistan readymade garments manufacturers and exporters association (PRGMEA) has called for giving special status to export-oriented value-added textile industry allowing it zero rating facility to boost new investment and revive economic growth.

PRGEMA central chairman Ijaz Khokhar said in Lahore that value-added textile sector should be given special status by separating it from other textile chains as it was generating more employment and revenue.

Tanveer said that the duration of gas load shedding for Punjab’s textile industry has been increased by two hours and now the industry gets gas for only 6 hours. He said that the shortage of gas in summer is beyond understanding and if the gas shortage continues, the export target could not be achieved.

"The government is not responding to the problems of the textile industry despite repeated calls," Ejaz lamented, and demanded that the association chairman be swiftly appointed as textile industry minister.

The APTMA leadership said declining exports, shrinking domestic market and capacity closures were a source of concern for the industry. "This situation has arisen out of high cost, energy shortages, old technology, absence of zero rating, shortage of raw materials, marketing disadvantages, absence of institutional support and policy-implementation divide."

Tanveer said Pakistan's textile industry had registered a decline of 16 per cent in exports in March and warned that exports could worsen. "Already Pakistan's growth has been stagnant to 22 per cent against 160 per cent of Bangladesh during 2008-2013," he said.
